Novel concepts for safer, lighter, circular and smarter vehicle structure design for enhanced crashworthiness and higher compatibility
Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON)
This destination includes activities addressing safe and smart mobility services for passengers and goods.
Europe needs to manage the transformation of supply-based transport into safe, resilient and sustainable transport and demand-driven, smart mobility services for passengers and goods. Suitable research and innovation will enable significant safety, environmental, economic and social benefits by reducing accidents caused by human error, decreasing traffic congestion, reducing energy consumption and emissions of vehicles, increasing efficiency and productivity of freight transport operations. To succeed in this transformation, Europe's aging (and not always sustainable) transport infrastructure needs to be prepared for enabling cleaner and smarter operations.
Europe needs also to maintain a high-level of transport safety for its citizens. Resilience should be built into the transport systems to prevent, mitigate and recover from disruptions. Research and innovation will underpin the three safety pillars: technologies, regulations and human factors.

PRESS RELEASE 01/2022
thermoPre ENGINEERING GmbH is pleased to announce the launch of the EU-funded Research and Innovation Action (RIA) SALIENT, which is synonymous for "Novel Concepts for Safer, Lighter, Circular and Smarter Vehicle Structure Design for Enhanced Crashworthiness and Higher Compatibility".
Production of unidirectional continuous fibre-reinforced thermoplastics for customer-specific series applications open to all industry sectors (acronym: FiberPre)
(Promotion of pilot lines in the field of key enabling technologies)
Together with our partner ERMAFA Sondermaschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH, we bring research results to economically viable industrial production.
The aim of the project is to set up a pilot line for single-stage direct processing for industrial use. The economic use is intended for bulk and high-performance plastics in combination with different reinforcement fibre types as well as with different reinforcement structures.
As a cooperation partner, thermoPre ENGINEERING GmbH contributes its expertise in the field of material, process and component development. A particular research focus is on the development of an online quality monitoring system for quality assurance of the semi-finished products produced with the pilot line, including the implementation of the required components into the pilot line.
Project overview
- Expansion of the semi-finished product portfolio through diversification of reinforcement structures and polymers
- Continuous process development from the reinforcing fibre to the component
- Development of material cards
- Quality assurance of semi-finished products and components (online quality management system)
- Duration: 16/12/2019 - 31/03/2022

Functionalisation and quality assurance of semi-finished products and components
(This measure is part-financed by tax revenue on the basis of the budget approved by the members of the Saxon state parliament).
The recruitment of a senior innovation expert in the company is intended to enable the acquisition, development and safeguarding of proprietary know-how and thereby strengthen the company's market position. Especially in the core business of the company, the development and production of continuous fibre-reinforced, thermoplastic semi-finished products (tapes), an increase in innovation is aimed for.
key topics
- Functionalisation of semi-finished products through sensor integration
- Optimisation of the manufacturing process
- Quality improvement through process monitoring
- Expansion of the product portfolio
- Opening up new markets
